Amsterdam, Netherlands – October 21, 2013 – Industry-first Smart Home Gateway functionality will be shown this week at the Broadband World Forum (Booth G9) in a demonstration of interoperability between heterogeneous wireless Home Area Network (HAN) technologies used to control switches, sensors and actuators from multiple suppliers. The demo, also presented earlier this month at an HGI meeting in Malmo, Sweden, is a collaboration of four organizations representing all links in the application value chain.
The collaboration partners – EnOcean Alliance, Lantiq, Prosyst and Rockethome – implemented a Smart Home Gateway that served as the central unit for device control and visualization of home status. Reflecting the goal of HGI to establish standards for a common software execution environment, the Smart Home system supports different wireless standards, such as DECT ULE, EnOcean, Z-Wave and ZigBee, via open interfaces. In the future, such architectures will provide users the full range of choice to design connected home systems to meet individual needs.
“HGI is setting specifications for the interoperation of software applications with smart home devices,” said Duncan Bees, Chief Technology and Business Officer of HGI. “The smart home gateway platform is a key platform of interest, and we are tying together cloud components, APIs, and an abstraction layer that will allow applications to access multiple home networks. The four-party demonstration shown at HGI’s BBWF booth is inspired by draft requirements set out by our smart home task force, and is an excellent instantiation of an approach that allows service providers to easily work with application providers to integrate new apps on their platform.” The contribution of each of the four collaborating companies is summarized below.
  • The EnOcean Alliance (www.enocean-alliance.com) contributed several batteryless switch, sensor and actuator units based on the EnOcean standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3-10) from its members. Thanks to the principle of energy harvesting, these devices work without batteries, using motion, light and temperature differences as their energy source. This allows smart home components which work maintenance-free and are highly flexible to install or to retrofit. The presented interoperable devices included a motion-powered switch from Debflex, a solar-powered temperature sensor from Afriso, a solar-powered window contact from Honeywell and a thermo-powered heating valve from Kieback&Peter. The demo was completed by a plug receiver from Diehl Controls which enables the user to control devices, e.g. a lamp, via EnOcean radio.
  • Lantiq (www.lantiq.com) provided the physical Smart Home Gateway, based on its AnyWAN™ EASY388 reference platform and complementary connectivity chipsets. The Lantiq platform supports the complete functionality of a Smart Home Gateway with its high-performance dual-CPU architecture, intelligent data stream offloading, support for Ethernet and multi-USB ports, and integrated WiFi 11n MIMO subsystem. Proven in millions of field deployments, the Lantiq platform can serve as both the Smart Home and Broadband Access Gateway.
  • ProSyst (www.prosyst.com) offers an HGI compliant stack for Smart Home gateways based on its own, highly optimized, embedded OSGi implementation. This stack provides support for various home protocols such as Z-Wave, ZigBee, EnOcean, KNX and DECT ULE, which are integrated through a device abstraction layer and a scalable home automation rule engine. The ProSyst solution includes several options for platform and application lifecycle management such as TR-069, OMA-DM and an efficient messaging protocol.
  • Rockethome (www.rockethome.com) provided the service delivery backbone for home automation and monitoring. The Rockethome Smart Home technology enables visualisation of complex data and control features in a user friendly interface that gives customers convenient and efficient control over their homes.
The emerging smart home market encompass a range of services, including home security, remote control of lighting and heating, and home energy use monitoring. Systems and services to support these applications are considered by industry analyst firms to represent multi-billion dollar markets, offering business opportunity for both incumbent network and over-the-top providers. Researchers at Infonetics, for example, reported in July 2013 that up to 70 percent of service providers they surveyed said they would begin to offer various types of home automation services by 2014. The HGI, founded in 2004 by nine telecom operators, is shaping the next generation of internet and voice services. Starting from use-cases and service needs, the HGI sets requirements for Home Gateways, infrastructure devices, and the home network. The HGI now has over 60 members from across the globe, representing the entire spectrum of players in the broadband home area. Flagship GRX330 Processor Uses Dedicated Offload Engines to Accelerate Data, Frees System CPU to Handle Digital Home Applications
Munich/Neubiberg, Germany and Amsterdam, Netherlands – October 22, 2013 – Lantiq, a leading supplier of broadband access and home networking technologies, today introduced at the Broadband World Forum Show new members of its high performance AnyWAN™ VDSL2 and Ethernet Home Gateway chipset family. The all new highly integrated SoCs include the flagship GRX330 communications processor, which uses a dedicated acceleration engine to maximize 802.11ac Wi-Fi throughput while keeping the CPU available for other tasks. ‘Turbocharging’ the Processor  Lantiq GRX processors are “turbocharged” as they feature multiple smart offloading engines. This integrated processing technology ensures that networking traffic is processed outside the CPU. This smart approach leads to zero percent load on the networking processor while operating DSL and Ethernet WAN uplinks.  The Lantiq GRX330 processor also introduces DirectLink™, a packet processing engine optimized for 802.11ac. This allows data transmission at the maximum 802.11ac network data rate without any significant load on the CPU. The GRX330 supports full 802.11ac Wi-Fi data traffic with only one twentieth of the CPU horsepower requirements of competitors’ Gateway processors. Comments Dirk Wieberneit, Lantiq Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) Business Unit:  “Lantiq’s unique, lean and smart offloading technologies allow network processing of nearly all data traffic outside of the main CPU. This is substantially different than the typical approach to handle increased network traffic by driving up CPU clock speed, which wastes power and can lead to sub-optimal performance. Our family of smart communications processors ultimately allows customers to more cost-effectively offer value-add services.” More Information on the turbocharging powers of the GRX330, optimized Integration and multiple added services is available in the Lantiq Backgrounder on GRX and on the Lantiq website at: http://www.lantiq.com/grx Availability Lantiq’s new GRX330 communication processor will be available in production quantities in the first quarter of 2014.  About Lantiq Lantiq offers a broad and innovative semiconductor product portfolio for next-generation networks and the digital Home. The ULE Alliance Reports Success of the 6th Interoperability Test Event
Bern, Switzerland, November 27, 2013. The ULE Alliance is pleased to report the 6th successful ULE Interoperability (IOP test event (November 12-13, 2013). The aim of the ULE Alliance is to enable the home automation market, through the deployment of ULE based solutions, out of the niche of proprietary and non-interoperable systems to a mass market with a broad selection of vendors and solutions working together. After this successful event, the focus now shifts towards enabling certification of ULE based products. The 6th ULE IOP test event was fully successful in proving the interoperability of ULE devices across different hardware and software implementations. All three major chipset vendors (Dialog Semiconductors, DSP Group and Lantiq) attended the IOP event and could successfully interoperate their devices across all layers as defined in the ETSI standard for ULE. The main focus of this IOP was to test all functions defined in the ETSI standard released in April this year incorporating also the latest enhancements which are ready to be adopted in the standard. One of the new features tested in this IOP was the interoperability of the country variant for the US spectrum, which is required to meet FCC regulations. The chipset vendors have these features already available on their ULE devices, and can swap between US/FCC mode and European mode within the same chipset. This event provided the first opportunity for proving interworking of the platforms for the US. “ULE is reliable and interoperable, and we confirmed again our confidence in the technology during this IOP event. With the successful testing of the US variant, we achieved another important milestone for making ULE the global standard for home automation and security”, said Jochen Kilian, Chairman of the Technical Working Group of the ULE Alliance. “With this milestone achieved, we move into the next phase of ULE deployment. Early adopters for ULE products are in the market already today, now we go ahead full steam with the certification program for ULE which is planned to be ready in the first half of 2014, and enable full market deployment”, he added. “I’m very pleased to see that the interoperability event proved that we have built a very solid basis for many accessories from different vendors to work in one Eco system”, said René Kohlmann, Chairman of the ULE Alliance Board. About ULE Alliance: The ULE Alliance is an international association, which promotes the worldwide allocation and market adoption of the ULE technology, the leading control network ecosystem for home and building use. The ULE Alliance is based in Bern, Switzerland with founding and promoter members: DECT Forum, Dialog Semiconductor, DSP Group, Gigaset and Vtech, and contributor member companies: Aastra, Arcadyan, AVM, Binatone, Crow, Deutsche Telekom, Lantiq, NEC, RTX, Sercomm, SGW, Swissvoice. Innovative Technique Described in Paper at IEEE Globecom Conference
Munich/Neubiberg, Germany – December 11, 2013 – Lantiq, a leading supplier of chips and software for broadband access and home networking, has developed a new computer modeling and simulation approach to speed development of broadband networking technology. In a paper scheduled for presentation today at the IEEE Globecom Conference, Lantiq researcher Rainer Strobel will describe a comprehensive approach to creating computer models of the complex, heterogeneous copper wire cable runs typically found in broadband access distribution systems. The modeling and simulation technique, based on analysis of actual cable runs operated by a major telecom carrier, provides more accurate results more quickly than the commonly used modeling technology developed in the 1990s. “As broadband access advances to development of hybrid fiber-copper networks such as Fiber-to-the-Distribution Point (FTTdp) and G.Fast, accurate computer modeling becomes an even more critical tool than in lower speed access networks,” said Craig Garen, Lantiq Senior Vice President of Global R&D.  “The groundbreaking approach defined in this research promises to speed both chip development and ultimately the successful large-scale implementation of access networks operating at speeds surpassing hundreds of megabits per second.”   The paper, “Wideband Modeling of Twisted-Pair Cables for MIMO Applications,” is being presented in the session on xDSL and Hybrid Access Networks (SA-ANS2) at IEEE Globecom 2014 in Atlanta, GA (USA), on December 11, 2013.  Named authors are Rainer Strobel of Lantiq, Reinhard Stolle of Hochschule Augsburg, and Wolfgang Utschick of Technische Universität München.   The paper is available on the Lantiq web site. About Lantiq: Lantiq offers a broad and innovative semiconductor product portfolio for next-generation network and the digital Home.
